Connemara is that rugged portion of West Galway, bounded on three sides by the sea. Galway Bay marks its southern extent, while Ireland's only fjord, Killary Harbour, is its northern boundary. A spread of islands on its Atlantic coast are included, while its eastern limits are traditionally Joyce's River, the Maum Valley and Lough Corrib. |

Connemara is a wild and majestic region of great scenic grandeur, surrounding the Twelve Bens mountains, that loom over the whole area. From Oughterard, "The Gateway to Connemara" on the shores of Lough Corrib, and from the villages of Spiddal and Carraroe along the rocky shores of South Connemara, the journey westwards is one of sheer magic. Islands such as the famous Aran Islands, can be reached from ferrypoints such as Rossaveal. There are regular sailings between Cleggan and Inishboffin, and boats leave for the more remote island of Inishturk from the nearby county of Mayo. Clifden, the "capital of Connemara" is a bustling, cosmopolitan town with top-quality hotels, bed and breakfasts, and restaurants. One of Ireland's most scenic roads - The Sky Road - juts out into the Atlantic from Clifden. |
